When aiming for a fun family vacation with the kids, nothing is worse than running out of activities midweek, causing loud protests of boredom, and you to tear your hair out. However, vacations are a time for you to relax as well, and if there’s limited amounts of that going on, you’ll end up back at work as high strung as when you left!

ROUND ONE: Location, location, location.

Manly Beach is located 1hr by bus/car, or 45m by beautiful ferry ride from Sydney CBD. It’s convenient location gives both a secluded, holiday resort feel while in the heart of Manly, placing it right on the beach, and near many restaurants and shops, as well as being closely located to Sydney City for a more hustle and bustle, sightseeing experience.

Public transport is readily available around Manly and to/from the CBD, consisting of buses, trains and ferries. Many restaurants and activity spots are also located within walking distance!

Byron Bay is located in the far north corner of NSW, and boasts many beautiful beaches. While it’s location hits the mark when it comes to a secluded, beach vacation, it’s seclusion may also be to it’s detriment if a faster paced scenery change is needed. Many restaurants surround the common holiday areas of Byron Bay, as well as national parks and activity related locations as you go further out. However, public transportation is nowhere to be seen, and a car would be required to find your way around.

Saturday 4 October –  Monday 6 October 2014 (Long Weekend)

The last weekend of the School Holidays, treat the kids to a holiday in Manly, and stay for the Jazz Festival.

The 37th annual Manly Jazz Festival will run from 1 – 6 October with performances in over 15 indoor and outdoor venues including major stages alongside Manly’s 2.4 kilometre (1.5-mile) Pacific surf beach.

The internationally acclaimed Manly Jazz Festival is known worldwide for its beautiful location and the diversity of music it presents, from traditional New Orleans jazz to funk, Latin, fusion, blues, gospel, swing and roots.
In 2013, 80,000 music lovers flocked to Manly Beach to hear artists such as Lionel Cole, the incredible Emma Pask and Big Ol’ Bus Band. Previous years have attracted international and local jazz greats such as Bill Summers, Eric Alexander, Tricia Evy, James Morrison, James Valentine and many, many more. The musical performances have evolved over the years and now range from traditional jazz to blues and funk performing in designated venues including open air beach-side stages, concert halls, bars, clubs and even churches. Jazz is at the core of almost all modern music styles so at Manly Jazz we celebrate a variety of music while still cherishing the purist forms of jazz.

Manly Jazz is first and foremost a music festival – a real celebration of sound. But it is also a celebration of Australia’s beach culture, good food, great times and especially the wonderful Manly vibe. What better place to do so than right here at our beautiful beachfront?

A major touring exhibition developed by MAG&M, funded by Visions of Australia and Arts NSW, celebrates the role Midnight Oil has played in our social and cultural history over the past 40 years. A collection of rare memorabilia – artefacts, posters, film, documents and photographs – sourced from public and private collections, including the archive of the band itself, forms the exhibition. Curated by Ross Heathcote, with Rob Hirst, Midnight Oil drummer and exhibition design by Wendy Osmond.
